Wet Packed Counterflow Scrubbers

Wet packed counterflow scrubbers are similar to crossflow scrubbers but with a different flow arrangement. In counterflow scrubbers, the gas flows upward (vertically) through the packed bed, while the scrubbing liquid flows downward, in the opposite direction (counter to the gas flow).

Key Features:

  • Counterflow Design: The opposing directions of gas and liquid flow enhance the contact time, improving the efficiency of contaminant removal.

  • Higher Scrubbing Efficiency: The counterflow design typically offers better gas‐liquid contact than crossflow, making it more effective for removing fine particulates and soluble gases.

  • Applications: Commonly used in industries like power generation, steel production, and chemical manufacturing to control pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, and ammonia.

Both crossflow and counterflow scrubbers use a similar wet scrubbing process but differ in their gas and liquid flow arrangements, with counterflow designs typically offering higher efficiency for certain applications.
